Sounds interesting, like pour-over soup XD
The mark afterwards is normal, as the puck expands when it comes in contact with water. The Line sounds pretty confusing but it might help estimating if you have way too much or too little coffee.
18g isn’t necessarily correct for your machine. Check the manual for what they recommend or put a dry puck on the machinr and take it out without pulling a shot. If the group head leaves a mark you have too much coffee.
Also like burntwits said, you can always try the espresso before making you drink.
I love seeing your progress into the coffee world and good Luck on your further journey.

7·1 month agoIf everyone likes to make coffee with extra steps, sure. If not, you would be better off with some kind of bean-to-cup or batch-brewer.
It depends mostly on what your coworkers want to do for coffee

Coffee@lemmy.world•As a comfort coffee enjoyer, what's the appeal of light roste?English
11·1 month agoI like the fruity acidity paired with the light sweetness of light roasted coffees. It makes them very interesting to drink. I like my coffee to have a more complex flavor instead of something “strong”.
I think you have the best chance of experiencing this either with the aeropress or a pour-over. Fast espresso shots also captures these flavors
I got it because I mostly made espresso before and it’s extremely convenient. I still equally make espresso as well but for making multiple cups I can just use the aeropress simultaneously
It’s nice for making good coffee in a short amount of time. Not as much work as pour over or espressi
I got myself an aeropress, because it was on sale in a café I was at. It is exactly how I imagined it to be and very easy and quick to brew with. The coffee tastes good out of it

1·1 month agoWiping the basket with a clean cloth should be enough if the cake knocks out nicely. It avoids getting water stuck between the basket and the spouts, making weighing the next dose easier

11·1 month agoIf you use the correct amount of coffee you should be able to knock it on the side of your compost/trash bin.
The thing with the grounds is called basket and the part with the handle is the portafilter. The grounds are called puck.
If you have a plastic tamper(thing you compress the grounds with) right now, you should buy a proper tamper that fits your grounds basket. Ideally self leveling so it’s easier to do properly

1·1 month agoWith Heliboard this works surprisingly well
It appears to be only properly visible on the actual web interface. I can’t see the wiki on Summit for Lemmy. I made a test page for you to check out
Turbo shots. I had a coffee that was quite “modern” tasting with lots of fruityness. It was not very compatible with people that drink “normal” coffee though.
I don’t know either, just saw the feature recently and it sounded interesting for this community
I recently saw the wiki feature that lemmy has. If people are interested, we could use that to collect the knowledge and tips people have for making coffee into a single place.
Maybe we could do a thread for this or use the posts that peopke have already made, like your coffee post and the water post from someone else.

1·1 month agoCool to see a follow up post. The water coming out after shutting off the machine could be from the absence of a solenoid valve. In more expensive machines, this switches the waterway to a flush channel so no more water can get into the grounds. It allows for a more precise water shutoff. This doesn’t matter much tho, if you stop the water at the right time so the remaining water hits your target ratio.
The Bitterness might come from the beans used. If you want more fruity flavour, you should get lighter roasted beans or get arabica beans if your current beans are robusta. This also goes for pre ground coffee
For the fill amount there might be a recommendation in the manual of your machine or a fill line in the basket. If not you can put the portafilter with the dry puck into the machine and take it out without starting the water. If there is an imprint visible on the puck you had too much coffee. If not you might have the right amount or too little coffee.
So far it looks delicious.
I finally finished a very dark batch of beans I bought because the packaging sounded fine.
These beans actually smelled like tuna when ground and tasted extremely harsh in espresso. They were so oily that I even had to clean the hopper of my grinder afterwards.
I am finally back to light roast coffee and I really missed it. I have also ordered coffee online for the first time. Very excited to see how it is when it arrives
