And think about it here. We already have computer systems that monitor patients’ real-time data when they’re hospitalized. We already have systems that check for allergies in prescribed medication. We already have systems for all kinds of safety mechanisms. We’re already using safety tech in hospitals, so what can be inferred from a vague headline about AI doing something that’s … checks notes … already being done? … Yeah, the safe money is that it’s just a scam.
You’re trying to paint windows in a positive light when Microsoft is desperately trying to spy on us and force more advertising on us even though we really don’t want it, and the only reason they can do that is because they have a monopoly. So yeah, it really is that awful.
And if we want to do side by side comparisons of the available software packages, most things that you would need for your average office setup are free and come by default on your major Linux distros. On Windows, you have to install them manually, and the default options are mainly commercial. So you’re paying more and possibly getting something worse, depending on your personal preferences about each software package and its alternative. That’s pretty bad, my friend. Windows is competing with free and losing, but they have inertia and a monopoly.

Not really. Musk was a snake oil salesman for years. The people who believed in him were foolish to do so, all of that long before his salute and his budget concerns. We should also remember that fascists don’t have a long game. They really are as ridiculous as they appear. There was no possibility for Trump or Musk to maintain a positive image, except through brute force threats.

Anyway, you’ve just shifted the definitional question from “AI” to “sentience”. Not only might that be unreasonable, because perhaps a thing can be intelligent without being sentient, it’s also no closer to a solid answer to the original issue.

That is a fucking terrible idea. If they later find it, they’ll lock you up and maybe later throw you out. The financial risk makes no sense.

Look, if we’re serious about having transparency and accountability in law enforcement, it’s going to take a lot of work. The starting point would be to require these officers to have their names in large text on the front and back of their shirts, like professional athletes do. They need to be named openly all the time, not just when they’re arresting someone, not just in tiny text on a badge that you can’t even see when you’re 6 ft away.
And most importantly, they need to be locked up or massively fined when they violate their own policy or people’s civil rights. When cops are not accountable for their actions, of course they’re going to behave like rat bastards.
