36·1 year agoAt some level, I’m just jealous of these people for getting what they voted for. I haven’t gotten what I voted for ever since I was old enough to vote.

Technology@lemmy.world•Python Performance: Why 'if not list' is 2x Faster Than Using len()English
1·1 year agoIn my experience, if you didn’t write the function that creates the list, there’s a solid chance it could be
Nonetoo, and if you try to check the length ofNone, you get an error. This is also why returningNonewhen a function fails is bad practice IMO, but that doesn’t seem to stop my coworkers.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump tariffs: Stocks soar as US president announces tariff pause
1·1 year agoAll time high was right before the election at ~45k, and now it’s around 40k, so about 11% down. Not sure where you came up with 30%, but it never even got close to that. A 30% drop would be around 31k, and the lowest it hit was around 37k. We all hate Trump, but don’t just make up numbers for internet points.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What is stopping corporations from hijacking the Fediverse by hosting massive servers?English
1·1 year agoEEE is a tool to steal users, not products. In the case of Microsoft, using EEE tactics with Linux is to convince people that they can stay on a Windows machine and get their work done, so they don’t need a Linux computer. In the Fediverse, thr value of stealing users is much more obvious.

No, this will be the AI that ignores your content and just spits out sponsored content. AI doesn’t really have to be involved much, but if it is, Google doesn’t have to pay up when you file a class action lawsuit for misleading content because they can say “It’s not our fault, thr AI did it.”

21·1 year agoThe government has mostly turned a blind eye to dark pattern business for years, and now the president is openly saying that he encourages it and wants companies to step up their game. Of course things are going to get worse, especially now where everyone will have forgotten this by the next election, so it’ll get to stay as “the norm”

91·1 year agoI mean, this is also an area where neural networks will improve things. Neural networks are excellent for optimizing data with an extremely large amount of input variables, as is the case here. You don’t need language models, you don’t need to steal all the content on the internet for training. You have analysis tools that will easily validate any solution, so you’re not going to deal with mystery hallucinations.

Once I asked google to remove my house from street view and it turned from a normal house to a blur, a bunch of shitty web scrapers thought it was recently renovated, so they started sending me ads for insurance to cover “my new upgrades”
