Technology@lemmy.world•Why SSD prices are skyrocketing, and why they'll get worse in the near-termEnglish
5·2 days agoHow good for that small percentage of people in an already small percentage of people who can afford to retire. A lot of retirees are on a fixed income, making it even worse.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft wants Edge to automatically open by default every time you turn on your Windows 11 PCEnglish
3·2 days agoAdmittedly the fact that they are ads is hidden better than most websites would. But it’s there if you think about it. Recommended apps in the start menu. The truckload of things you have to decline on install like an Office subscription, Game Pass, etc. The settings app will occasionally have pop ups that remind you that you have a free trial. There are pop ups that cover the entire OS reminding you to “finish setting up your PC” with no option to say no.

2·2 days agoWhich, funny enough, Microsoft is thinking about sunsetting, because they can’t stop losing. Although they have very similar features with Intune.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What’s the Facebook clone in the fediverse?English
12·5 days agoThere’s Friendica & Diaspora, but the problem is how I use Facebook. For me, it’s a people repository, because everyone is there. If I haven’t seen someone in a long time but need to contact them I’ll log in and message them. Do I need to cyber stalk them to find out if they’re a crazy person? Facebook. Planning events that include strangers? Facebook.
Unless an alternative reaches even higher critical mass than Mastodon, it is essentially useless to me. I don’t actually need or want to post statuses and pictures.

Technology@lemmy.world•Asus Co-CEO: MacBook Neo Is a 'Shock' to the PC IndustryEnglish
2·24 days agoTo clarify, some versions of Linux are lighter weight with resources, and macOS does tend to take up more RAM at rest to make things pull up snappier, if you have it to spare. But their compression algorithm is better, and if you are using near the limit, it will be more efficient with the use of the RAM you have available before lagging. With Windows and Linux, it feels more like if you’re out of RAM you’re out if RAM. It’s less likely to happen at all on Linux though.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you stick to the same linux distro across your devices?English
6·27 days agoNo, and that’s the beauty of Linux.
Desktop gaming PC: Fedora KDE (might try Bazzite if I stop dual booting Windows, but I already got Nvidia set up and that’s the hard part)
Old laptop: Zorin OS
Old as dirt laptop: antiX
Wife’s Surface: Pop!_OS 22.04. Maybe change it eventually to something lighter.
I will likely go with Ubuntu Server or Debian when I set up my home server. Ubuntu seems like it has better Docker support.

Very much possible, yes. I don’t think any game is worth the risk. Even if you have a PC dedicated to just gaming, buying new hardware if it gets borked is more expensive than just buying the game. Or playing the hundreds of great games kn existence without Denuvo.
