13·2 days agoOnce someone gets some hooks into you, your only choice is to rip that hook out.
If it’s a small hook, you might be able to recover your political career. if it’s just a few small hooks, maybe a medium sized hook, you might not go to jail.
but AIPAC is using anal hooks from hell. they started with the small ones, and they’ve been getting progressivley bigger and more numerous, and now… well. I’m not into that.

15·19 days agoI think there does need to be some reigning in of spending.
We shouldn’t operate on an unbalanced budget as a normal course.
Keep in mind it’s mostly republicans blowing up the debt- tax breaks for people who don’t need tax breaks. Wars against people who weren’t a threat. Bailouts to company’s that then use the cash for a stock buy back… funding Israel…. There’s a shit load of problematic spending but it’s always health care and education and social safety nets first.

politics @lemmy.world•Should we make a law that regulates third parties that handles the information that they receive for any age checks ?English
8·20 days agowe shouldn’t have age verification at all.
First off, if your goal is to keep kids from porn, that’s not going to work. Kids will always find a way around whatever obstacles you put in their path. even back when porn was just a physical book you had to go into a special store with blacked out windows and flash an id to get, kids still got porn.
But it’s absolutely not about protecting children. It’s about monitoring the entire population and forcing adherence to whatever social rules those in power want to drop while making a buck off compromising everyone’s personal information.

1·21 days agopart of that whole process is determining the validity of the charges.
Like. even for violent murderers “I was never in Florida” or wherever, is a valid defense against being extradited.

politics @lemmy.world•'I will destroy you': Trump fixer accused of threatening DOJ official — then got her firedEnglish
1·21 days agoThat’s not how that works.
if, for example, texas wants to send cops to arrest out-of-state doctors providing abortions to texas residents, that would be illegal, and the state the doctor resides in would almost certainly intervene if they had the opportunity to. (I.E. the doctor calls 911 and they have time.)
while there’s some circumstances where states would be okay with outside cops coming in to make an arrest, those circumstances are like “I was trying to pull him over and they fled across state lines.”
But they have no general authority to arrest people outside their jurisdiction. the usually process is that they would files the extradition paperwork/ gets an interstate warrant, the fugitive state (where the fugitive resides,) reviews the paper work and holds a hearing on it and then makes a decision, then the fugitive gets carted back. But the arrest happens by the law enforcement belonging to the fugitive state.

1·21 days agoif you record someone on a phone call, the recording happens where you happen to physically be.
so the “crime” would have happened in a 1-party state, and would not have been a crime.

10·24 days agoMy point is her explanation is “people were uncomfortable” as if that’s not a valid reason to ask someone to leave.
It is.
It very much is.
Especially if your security goons are acting like assholes questioning/stopping people, etc. (not saying they were but usually details like that will want as much control as they can legally take.)
