So what are you doing then?
So what are you doing then?
Not defending Mike Johnson here, but there’s supposed to be more to it than just the days in session. About 140 in session days, which allows other days to read and research what you’re legislating on. And then the lengthy recesses are so congressmen can be home to work with and listen to their constituents.
Whether or not it happens like that is a mystery, I guess.
A crowd here and there of 35,000 isn’t nearly enough. It needs to be crowds of hundreds of thousands in hundreds of places at once. And the only way you get there is a massive increase in faith that the elected Democrats will actually do something. This performance (because I will concede that it’s just a performance) is exactly the kind of act that increases that faith.
He’s doing this for the exact same reason Bernie and AOC are - to generate headlines and display that people by and large are not okay with what the Trump administration is doing. There is nothing actually actionable from the rallies (or very, very little). And sadly at the moment there’s very little that can be done to actually stop Trump’s plans. It’s important therefore that Democrats continue to passionately, loyalty, and most importantly eye-catchingly continue to protest however they can.
The problem is that word “elected.” It doesn’t specifically exclude someone assuming the role of president through the line of succession.
As long as the US uses a first-past-the-post system, third parties will not be viable. The only REAL way to go forward is to take over the Democratic party and push it left. We’ll see how it goes…
My guess is they’re saving their reconciliation bill for something bigger than a continuing resolution. Congress as a whole is limited to just three a year, and only one of them can be about spending. Kicking the can down the road a couple months seems like a horribly inefficient use for reconciliation.
We really do need to choose words wisely when we talk about these things. Inflammatory language only serves to undermine your argument when your claims can be dismissed as exaggeration. Is this a horrific situation? Yes. Is it illegal? Almost certainly. Is it the brazen disregard of law and public opinion people are claiming? Not yet! The Trump admin is allowing Khalil access to family and lawyers, and he will have his day in court. When the arrestees aren’t located in a day and given due process, then we can call them disappeared. Until then, call this what it is and no more. Be factual so people can’t as easily dismiss your facts.
Yeah, but it’ll actually work and make you fall in love with video games again.
Snakes do not abide by the laws of nature.
Depends on where you are in California I guess. I see more Rivians here than Cybertrucks.
