Employee at the Black Mesa research facility in New Mexico. Recently we’ve dealt with 2 aliens trying to steal snacks.

Moved from kbin.social, here’s my old account: https://kbin.social/u/Mars2k21

I moderate the AI community over there (infrequently).

Hope your day is going well.

  • Yeah I’ve pretty much accepted that kbin.social is just gone at this point. I also owned a community there (/m/ai). I didn’t have any spammers appear, but it eventually just died since spam ruined the rest of the instance.

The signs were already there months in advance, but most of us stayed on the instance in hopes that the dev would eventually take up one of the offers to help maintain the instance. Was fun while it lasted, and was the best alternative to Reddit for sure as a software. I don’t even know how Ernest kept up with development during the initial Reddit exodus lol.

Honestly, I’m not impressed with Lemmy so far and I don’t really vibe with mbin for personal reasons even though the software is great.

This whole kbin story has just pointed out a lot of flaws in the Fediverse as a whole for me. I still like the idea, but the execution needs improvement.

  • This has been a long time in the making…hopefully Firefox will see a market share increase. Google is doing this right as they get slapped by an antitrust ruling ironically lol. If you haven’t already just go ahead and switch, if you like Lemmy you’ll probably like Firefox as well.

Side note: I try not to be negative here, but this would be a great time for Mozilla to get their act together as an organization. Love Firefox and the idea, but Mozilla has been pissing off the FOSS space for a while now with their decisions. If they’ve improved in recent years, disregard this.

  • Was super invested in it (was considering moderating multiple magazines), as I really like Kbin and the vision of it being an all-in-one microblogging and link aggregator platform in the Fediverse. With there being so many federated platforms serving the same purpose, I like how Kbin sort of went against the fragmentation. Had to leave it for Lemmy just the other day as well. I think that Ernest has created the best alternative to Reddit despite the struggles he’s faced with development and maintaining the instance alongside with personal issues.

mbin looks great but I think I’ll just stay with the more stable option and community…being an early adopter was fun for a year though. I’m still a little iffy about mbin personally. If there’s a mbin/kbin API release I may reconsider.

  • Honestly surprised at the amount of arguing over iPhones and Androids here, its 2024. It’s not that deep.

Seriously, of all things tech news related nowadays, green and blue bubbles are a non-issue. If someone has an issue with it, it’s probably worth not making it your issue as well and just walking/swiping away to find someone else to talk to.

I consistently talk to iPhone users using SMS. Besides from the occasional picture compressed into oblivion, nobody cares enough to even make jokes about the phones we are using. At the end of the day, it’s just a phone.
