Oh… and the late, great Hannibal Lecter was there giving me a standing ovation…
That’s part of the reason why new community oriented projects are way more interesting to me now than most software. There are some outliers in the space who still have dedicated people in their craft rather than for money but it is fewer and farther between.
Imagine if they pulled that on the idle timeout pause screen too…
Welcome to the club!
I really feel this especially related to mobile (cellphone and tablet) communications: (Google Pixel is the only device offering substantial support for alternative OSes, Mobile Payment Processors rely on one of the big names like Google, Apple, Samsung etc., other projects becoming unmaintained and supporting 10 year old phones, etc.)
In the personal (laptop and desktop) computing space we are in a much better place. You are much less beholden to companies’ interest in harvesting data on every aspect of your life.
Sure, we can lament that most people don’t care. But look where we are now: I have daily driven my Linux box for a year to play all the games that are in style with my friends without Microsoft constantly over my shoulder. I’m on Lemmy and other Fediverse platforms, unbeholden to specific corporate policies. I use Beeper which means I don’t have to have Meta apps harvesting interaction behaviour directly on my primary cellphone. I can’t win every battle for my privacy and freedom, but each conscious choice I have that I make is a statement of resistance, and one step of many towards my ideal of the computer world I wish to be in.
We should have universal background checks for firearms and a ban on assault weapons like what was used to attack former President Trump!
Oops, I cribbed that from Harris and Walz’s Evil Communist Leftist Campaign.
🖐🤚We need to bring the wand-manufacturing jobs back to America 👐, it’s terrible👆 they’ve all closed up shop and moved to Narnia.
Ok. When media gets hold of her, this is what they’re going to do:
Breaking news: Harris says XYZ in interview!
Coming Up Next: Why Trump says that Harris saying XYZ is bad!!!
Over and over again so that they get to lick both sides of the pot in engagement.
Slightly unrelated thought that occurred to me…
Harris, during the debate, invited people to attend Trump rallies. Republicans wouldn’t want to do anything that a liberal, communist Democrat like Harris would ask them to. Which might be more disincentive to attend the rallies and melt Trump and his followers’ brains even more than just the heat.
Trump’s advisors were reaching for any reason to convince him he won, because they know how disastrous another debate would be.
Not to worry, we will be entertained by the Walz-Vance faceoff, though I’ll admit giving TFG the talking to he’s deserved since forever ago was immensely gratifying.
Many Republicans were also not convinced about their candidate’s performance in the debate in Philadelphia. Some 53% of Republican voters in the poll said Trump won the debate, compared to 91% of Democrats who said she was the victor. Among Republicans, 31% said no one won and 14% said Harris got the better of Trump.
I get partisanship is bad, but I’m glad 9 out of 10 Democrats and 1 of 7 Republicans have their head screwed on correctly. Did a large portion of viewers watch it with the volume on mute?
I mean sure because conservative women are supposed to be either stuck in the kitchen and nursing children, a husband’s sex slave or a mouthpiece advocating for the first two.
Social conservative positions have just gone off the rocker and left most women behind, being mocked, insulted and threatened. Examples are the childless cat lady comment and recently Musk’s abhorrent outburst re: Ms. Swift.
Buttons pushed.
That’s an encouraging sign.
Even a 1% boost in turn out from young people could mean a lot in many races across the country, in swing state country I mentioned or not. Most people aren’t Swifties, but chances are young people would have at least a friend of a friend who is one who may motivate the people around them to get involved this election.
How many are from the esteemed nation of PAWANEVMIAZGANC?
The highlight for me for the whole debate was not Trump’s pet-eating outburst but the perfect setup and execution Harris did to bait him into that unhinged rant instead of talking about immigration.
She “invites” people to go to Trump rallies. She follows up the point about people leaving rallies early with a note along the lines of: you’re about to watch Trump not talk about you. Sure enough, he fell into the trap, and Trump talked about what he cared about most at that moment.
I noticed after the initial laugh Harris had to temper her smile a bit to evoke serious disappointment in Trump’s unhingedness and not look like she is agreeing. I bet Harris was absolutely ecstatic in that moment seeing how effectively he took the bait she laid for him.
Another silly bill coming from the clown-show Republican House. I’m really crossing my fingers for a trifecta, so we can get actually useful policy accomplished. Get’er done Americans!
