If this is the extent of it, and frankly considering that Google let’s you opt out of personalized tracking when many sites have begun forcing them onto users and forcing me to constantly clear their cookies, that makes me a lot less mad with them.

Maybe Elon is getting to me, but … what compels assholes like this to say things like this and not do it themselves? I guess they need to keep away from actually doing it so that they can later claim they never were the ones to do it and that their joke statement was taken out of context.

I wonder what made their leadership continue to escalate into increasingly bullshit decisions. What happens if I need to pause because I need my PC to be quiet so I can address something and still an ad suddenly starts playing, completely interrupting what I wanted to address in a completely intrusive way? Even if democrats win, there’s the very real danger afterwards that nothing is able to be changed just as it has not been able to under Biden, that the Supreme Court can continue to act outside of laws and ethics, that there continues to be no penalty for disinformation and bribes, that the voting system continues to be slanted towards one side, that billionaires continue buying up and manipulating what’s reported in key states, that ignorance and bigotry continues to worsen and become more extreme, that key federal agencies are moved to some of the most bigoted and politically slanted states…

Just a note, while ranked voting is much better, the people who are influenced by parties that game the system and a gullible ignorant base usually consolidate themselves into one big party that still does everything to undermine the rest of the coalitions as long as it makes them look bad even if it’s worse off for society as a whole and that like a tumor can keep growing until it goes past the midpoint for toppling the democracy that elected it. It’s part of the solution, but not all of it, societies act like headless chickens when things get bad enough, regardless of who was responsible for them. For example, Brexit.

Internationally, there’s a huge correlation between the parties influenced by money and special interests and the ones quite willing to let society burn if it makes their opponents look bad, and it’s such a shame that society always seems to have these at the other end because of an influentially gullible voter base.

Users could also be doing and reporting the checking up - if votes were transparent - and they would be able to do it on far wider scale. Oh those leopards, eating your faces, vote obfuscation proponents.

Because before, if you were trash you were ostracized and it was effective. Now, they can join a social support group of trash that will be easy to politically mobilize as long as they are given relevance. They just need to be normalized and led into living in a bubble so controlled that they only focus on how the rest of the society is wrong while evading introspectively looking at how much worse and how much more contradictory some of the elements within their bubble are.

As to why it is seemingly done randomly in reddit, it is to decrease your global karma score to make you less influential and to discourage you from making new comments. You probably pissed off someone’s troll farm in what they considered an influential subreddit. It might also interest you that reddit was explicitly named as part of a Russian influence effort here: https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1366201/dl - maybe some day we will see something similar for other obvious troll farms operating in Reddit.

It’s not when it’s your device doing the computing. All electronic devices should have visible hardware indicators for when their camara or microphone is on, but that’s a consumer rights issue most people are dismissive of, so it’s not happening. Some people even always want it on for the assistant functionality.

Because opposition parties generally have their groups in there, which would cause political backlash and distance the supporters that still use it. Not that banning social networks abusing their privilege through hidden moderation and promotion and selling their user’s data so propagandist know who and how to target shouldn’t be done, but right know it would be done under the counter-chants of “repression” in the particular cold war 2.0 state of affairs of the world today, and that’s very politically taxing.
