As far as I can tell, the frog incident was not real-world. It was a police department vetting a system by doing fake test stops. They did one with Princess And The Frog playing in the back seat and the transcription system interleaved the traffic stop and film dialogue, then took that at face value for the summary.

System still sucks, but at least they were testing before blindly relying on it.

CD Projekt has shareholders. Shareholders expect revenue growth with less to no expense growth.

GOG wants to grow expenses (developing patches for niche games) with little potential for revenue. Shareholders don’t tend to like doing things for goodness sake, while private owners can do whatever they like.

I carry a large backup battery when I travel for work. It can keep my laptop going under load all day, allowing me to not care at all about proximity to outlets when working. It also allows me to painlessly recharge phones by just handing it to someone.

They updated the config so that systems querying it could see the shards in addition to the main dummy DB. The tool that pulled data out of it assumed that it could only see the dummy, however, so it just asked for everything when it pulled a report to pass to the filtering system.

The filtering system assumed the report it received would be properly formed and crashed if it got one that was malformed.

Accountants tally the numbers and hand you the totals. Twisting them is unethical and can lead to them losing their licenses.

Analysts manipulate the numbers to push a message. No ethics allowed.

JWO hasn’t shut down. The system got polished enough for them to sell it to other companies, so they don’t need their own test-platform locations anymore.

JWO and similar systems do not reduce labor. The people working cashier become customer service attendants. These systems are valuable when the issue is throughput and sales are being lost at peak times. Airport convenience stores and stadium concession stands, for example, can get significantly higher revenue for the same footprint.

On the other hand, the only way to get good training data is to generate data indistinguishable from the real-world scenario and then have humans mark it up the way you want the system to do it. You might as well have the data actually be from the real world and recoup some of the costs with sales.

I’m also one of his constituents and originally had the same grumbles about the $v$ election. I know someone who worked with him in his old life as a nepobaby at the family company, however, so I asked them about him.

They said that he recognized his lack of real experience and perspective and made up for it by surrounding himself with a diverse group of people. He would invite those insights, absorb them, and give ample credit to those around him.

Watching him as governor, he appears to still do the same thing. He is passionate about things as if he had lived experience because he surrounds himself with those that do, amplifying their fight with his unfairly-acquired power.

Nobody can make a successful browser that is simpler. The moment a user hits a website that no longer works, they are going back to their old browser.

All these new features exist because websites replaced every single program most people used. Web browser now have to be capable of doing anything pretty well. It’s not some grand conspiracy to take over the internet, it’s providing the features devs want so they can deliver the things they want in the modern multiplatform no-install world.
