Rawstory is a clickbait trash rag. I always cross-check their headlines with more legitimate sources. I’d ban their links altogether from Lemmy if it were up to me; half of their “stories” are either exaggerated, taken out of context, or based on something shat out by some random Xitter user.

Idaho features beautiful nature and really interesting geology, so there’s plenty of tourism potential. If it weren’t for the people it would make for a lovely destination.

Because most people don’t believe it could happen to them or someone they care about.

I should have said they have their own type of sarcasm but it’s different; you wouldn’t, for instance, respond to a simple question with the obvious opposite of the truth (e.g. “I just love the cold” when asked if you like winter).

There are also a lot of non-native English speakers here. English is a tricky enough language when used sincerely, then add to that the fact that we English natives are huge fans of sarcasm, and I’m surprised misunderstandings don’t happen more often. (I had major culture shock moving to Japan and finding out sarcasm was not really a thing there. I always assumed it was part of the human condition.)

In addition to comments others have made about some of the colors being difficult to see/differentiate, I think it would be worthwhile to distinguish one-way defederation from mutual defederation, perhaps with a texture?

It would make the graphic busier, but I also would enjoy seeing population percentages next to each instance name (to give weight to the significance of certain defederations, e.g. how much of the fediverse are you excluding by defederating with hexbear vs lemmy.world).

It really depends on the subject; mathematics for instance probably isn’t going to change much decade to decade, but psychology is changing constantly.

Depending on what exactly they are, these books may be practically worthless. I recently looked into selling some of my old college textbooks (that were $50-100 each at purchase), and they currently list online for <$5 each. Old editions are of no use to current students, and there’s no demand for previous editions (while there’s a good deal of supply).

Seeing an American flag, I just roll my eyes and move on (for a while now I’ve felt that our overuse of the flag–especially for home decor–is tacky, but as the article demonstrates, everyone has their own motivations for flying it). But “250 celebration” decor? Major stinkeye. I’ve actively avoided businesses and neighbors that post this nonsense.

My point was more that a pickup’s core demographic live in places where range is absolutely a consideration. Some city folks do have good reason to own a pickup, but for most it’s an aesthetic/image thing. Which, given the environmental/traffic safety consequences of driving a larger vehicle than necessary, is plenty deserving of judgement imo.

Rural people, as in the folks who actually have a use for pickups. As it so happens, it is about 200 miles round-trip to my nearest airport/major city, so if this were my vehicle, I’d have to take a charge break when picking someone up/dropping them off at the airport, or making a shopping run, or going to a concert/special event, or seeing a medical specialist. And I’m not even that far off the beaten path; I have family for whom the one-way drive to their nearest major city/airport is over 200mi. Plus if you’re hauling anything, I’d imagine that range goes down quick.
