5·1 month agoInstance selection at sign-up remains the primary barrier to entry.
I think there needs to be a quick question form upon sign-up, going over the biggest differences between instances. Such as: “do you want downvotes activated? Do you want to see NSFW? Do you want little, moderate, or heavy automated blocking of potentially objectionable material?” etc, then have the sign-up page provide you with up to three instance options based on your selected preferences.
Otherwise you’re either forcing users to do this research on their own (“ew, homework just to sign up for social media? no thanks”) or they’re going in blind and selecting at random, very likely ending up on an instance with qualities/features they don’t like.
A separate issue: during the big 2023 rexit (when I moved over), the primary instance that most new users joined, lemmy.world, was a buggy, buggy mess, practically unusable for the first few days. I don’t know if that was specifically because of the influx of new users or if it just worsened problems that had skated by when there were only a handful of users before, but I imagine the bugs turned away quite a few potential new Lemmings. Hopefully that won’t be an issue this time around, but I guess that depends on how big the exodus is and how much Lemmy infra has strengthened in the 2.5 years since.

From Wikipedia: Unlike other members of the family Salamandridae, newts are semiaquatic, alternating between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Not all aquatic salamanders are considered newts, however.

7·3 months agoI saw a clip of the performance… It was a really bad lip sync. As in he kept pulling the mic away from his head well before the lyrics were over. I’d heard the controversy and was like, I’m sure it wasn’t that obvious he was lip syncing, and was floored when I saw the actual performance.
I’m not Canadian, but my understanding is Alberta is basically the Texas of Canada. Maybe even worse, more like the Wyoming or Idaho of Canada.
Surprised no one has commented on the juxtaposition with the Alberta license plate yet

1·4 months agoI mean, it’s not like it’s a time-consuming thing to do. I haven’t checked in with everyone, but at least one person is still using the setup two years later and is grateful for it so I call that a win. But my original point was about not making assumptions that people who use ublock are going to be tech savvy.

3·4 months agoI’ve installed ublock on the phones of some very non-techie older adults in my life, specifically because they’re non-techie and never would have even known ublock existed otherwise. Granted these folks are definitely not on Lemmy either, but point is there’s a wide range of users out there

11·7 months agoI know about razor bumps and I don’t mean to make it out to be a total non-issue; my problem is with the headline and byline, which seem to make light of what was actually a deeply disturbing speech. “Look at this idiot, ranting about beards, much ado about nothing, don’t even bother reading about what he said, it was just stupid fluff, shoulda been an email lol!” is not the message that the media needs to tell the public when both Hegseth and Trump made several horrifying, fascism-escalating statements today. (And let’s be real, most people don’t actually read the articles, so burying the lede like this is functionally similar to not reporting on it at all.)

651·7 months agoHis comment about beards is iterally the least problematic/newsworthy part of his speech. Why the fuck would you focus on this and not, I don’t know, his straight outta 1984 “war is peace” statement? Extreme journalistic malpractice.
Switching accounts over is a big issue for sure, but even bigger is when entire communities are lost. Those are much harder to switch over, both due to scale and moderation concerns.
Good point, title altered accordingly
