Excellent read. Makes me wonder of the forgotten or underappreciated place of games that are meant to only take a few hours and then exit your life forever: games like Journey and others that take only a few hours to beat. They’re completely antithetical to this style of design.

Riley@lemmy.mlOPto Technology@lemmy.world•Bigscreen Announces the Beyond 2 VR HeadsetEnglish5·4 months agoI think you can order prescription lenses with it. Maybe with the halo strap it might accommodate glasses nicely.
Riley@lemmy.mlOPto Technology@lemmy.world•It Might Be Time to Admit the Great VR Experiment Has FailedEnglish21·4 months agoNeeded to ditch the original strap and put the Bobo M3 strap on it, but once that was done it was the first time I was able to use VR with no weight on my cheekbones. Wildly changed how I felt about it as it was suddenly so comfortable I could use it for hours without discomfort.
Riley@lemmy.mlOPto Technology@lemmy.world•It Might Be Time to Admit the Great VR Experiment Has FailedEnglish21·4 months agoI personally feel like the Quest 3 is the most comfortable headset I’ve ever owned (previously owned the CV1 and the Quest 1) and that for me trumps all of its issues with the lens/display setup.
I am desperate for Valve to succeed and really shake up the market but I think they’ll continue to make headsets that cost over $1K and just aren’t palatable to a wider audience. Hopefully Deckard is at the very least good enough to justify that price. I certainly have more faith in them after loving the Steam Deck.
Riley@lemmy.mlOPto Technology@lemmy.world•It Might Be Time to Admit the Great VR Experiment Has FailedEnglish4·4 months agoI posted the article mostly for discussion, I personally have had a great time play AC: Nexus VR lately. But it does feel like the market is in a bit of a weird place right now as Meta/Apple are both pushing AR and non-gaming use cases, when the only thing these headsets have really been shown to be superior at is playing games.
Canadian $
It’s just wild to watch Bluesky fans stumble over themselves to say it’s part of a federated future and that it’s decentralized yada yada, when it takes millions of dollars to do with it what takes me $80 for a Raspberry Pi and $15 for a domain name to do with ActivityPub.
This is very recent news but there is a group of people on Bluesky that are looking at setting up their own PDS, but it feels clear to me that the system as designed is so heavily biased against third parties doing this. It’s just such a completely different vibe compared to ActivityPub platforms that are built so strongly around the goal of making it easy to do in order to make it more widely distributed.

Riley@lemmy.mlto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Post with 22k upvotes mentions Lemmy as an alternative to RedditEnglish24·4 months agoGod yeah, what a frustrating sentiment to see. Very common among people who won’t give the fediverse any modicum of good faith engagement. “This is different from what people are used to and is therefore bad” instead of understanding that maybe there’s a reason it’s built that way.

Completely unique and very difficult to experience with alternative hardware nowadays (compared to the PSP which can be played on nearly everything). The games library is incredibly unique because small budget games still had a big chance to succeed.
Riley@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Android apps are blocking sideloading and forcing Google Play versions insteadEnglish2862·10 months agoIf the Play Store becomes required like that then Android’s already-shaky status as an open source base platform is going to go out the window. I’m glad there are non-Google distros of Android but there really needs to be more of a push to make a completely FOSS phone platform.
Fedi’s daily active users actually went up for the last two months after hitting a low of just under 1,000,000. That’s a lot of people, and on a platform that likely has the ability to carry on like a cockroach in a nuclear winter.
I’m really keen on one of these displays eventually, as I can set aside the issues with refresh rate and colour accuracy, but the price needs to drop way down. It needs to be competitive with regular LCD monitors.
I look at terminals all day for work, this would make it so much more comfortable.
