Ah. That’d be a nightmare here, probably. Japan is pretty notorious for low tech literacy outside of a few narrow areas. I also think that this might have reliability impacts that just drive people away. Finally, no average japanese person has any idea what the fediverse is, so that’s another hurdle to jump.
I don’t disagree, but the majority of Japanese are just using whichever device is in their pocket (largely iPhones or Android, some feature phones, the occasional tablet, and much more rarely (outside of official business work), an actual full-sized computer).

I deleted mine years ago but, in Japan, it’s still one of the main ways small shops communicate with their customers. Some use FB or insta instead. They don’t have the knowledge, money, or desire to create a whole website that is far more difficult to interact with and update than the platforms that are free, people use, and are easy to update.
Maybe they’re leaving room for improvement?
I have an LG with WebOS and have youtube premium and haven’t seen any ads so far (though it may be regional). Cheers for the link, tough. I wonder if it works on Japanese versions
I spent quite a bit of time working multiple jobs to survive with basically no time to do anything other than sleep. I can definitely relate to this.
You also have to gather all the paperwork from various places, which could be easy if your parents are responsible, but onerous if not. In many places, there is no public transportation to those or between those places (or it’s not in a timely manner). After that, they still have to get to the place to get the ID. All of this is time and money that particularly the poor and those in under-served communities cannot muster.
Edit: to add, they also need to get time off of work to accomplish this, which they may not be able to afford. This is why I do not really like voter ID laws as they are often proposed.

I mostly agree. I think having a “do it by age 30” rule or something might be a little better than requiring it at 18 (I graduated high school at 17 and was already in university at 18 so this would have messed things up financially as well as mentally).

Seconded. I really miss some aspects of life before the 24-hour news cycle and social media (but definitely not everything about that time).
I was following several youtube channels about farming. I was listening to a podcast where a few of them talk. The last couple of episodes have been peeling the mask off. One was talking about watching this shitbag and then went into weird pseudoscience, and that was when the podcast and two of the three people on it lost my subscription. Sucks because their actual content related to farming, animal husbandry, and building was useful, but they don’t get my views, subs, or money if they’re going to support people like Carlson.
I’ve been living without the first two for years now. I could live without youtube if I really needed to, though I do watch a lot of stuff about farming that is really helpful. Most of my youtube watching is educational with a slight smattering of games and entertainment and a tiny bit of news.
My dad, my classmate’s family, and I all had one in the early '90s. An old friend collected (probably still does) them and had a variety in his closet. I think we can safely say ‘at least around 20’ now.
Dad was also in a commodore user group back before the modern internet. Those meetings were always fun.
Why? Cold noodles are nice and refreshing. Pasta salad (cold noodles) is a thing all over the place.
It’s probably more sanitary in Japan, but in the US I could see the guy sitting in the both next to me sneezing directly into the water, licking his chopsticks before attempting (and missing) some noodles.
Tell me you’ve never spent long in Japan without telling me you’ve never spent long in Japan. We had a problem during corona where people would remove their masks to sneeze or cough. We have tons of gross people over here.
It is unappealing. I would not eat at a place like that. Some do have separate chopsticks for catching the somen (long o, so probably sounds less like semen than you might think), but it’s still not great. I have seen it at family events as well.

Work has me using my current phone for alerts on my on-call rotation. I asked them to send me a pager instead if I can’t properly filter the alerts (Jira on Android has at least 2 sets of notification settings and then there are settings apparently within Jira. I was getting basically every Jira, Confluence, etc. message).
