Turning to authorities to suppress fascism doesn’t seem practical. We need to cultivate good democratic systems and education systems that create citizens capable of thinking critically and turning down bad ideologies on their own. Citizens should be empowered, not coddled.

Fair enough, but in that case your argument seems in favor of staying with established systems even when central figures in those systems are corrupt. It’s hard not to sympathize with the impulse to separate from systems with prominent corruption, but perhaps there is an argument to be made about the need to tolerate some level of corruption for sake of social structure.
This concept of structured communities creating diversity appeals to me. As structural biologists, we often say Structure is Function, and it’s obvious this concept applies to societal rules and systems as much as physical systems.
It’s not willful ignorance to block users, comms, or instances. I’ve been pushed to block news/politics comms across multiple lemmy instances just to save myself the time spent reading the smooth-brained mouth-breathers argue we should abandon money and build a utopia out of hopes and dreams.

America’s electoral oligarchy system is meant to placate the people without giving them any agency, power, or meaningful control over how the society they live in functions. They can protest all day every day, and it’ll only have an effect if they convince an oligarch.

To be fair, I’m not convinced these people think long term. They might well have just made a place to “store” people while they wait to legally deport them. Not that it actually makes a difference given the horrific conditions they’re placing people in, but as always with MAGA it’s difficult to distinguish malice and stupidity.

Is there a solution to this whole government censorship problem? I don’t know networking, but it seems like the centralized systems get the central nodes shut down and the decentralized systems are too easily tracked and/or too inefficient. Reticulum looked interesting, but it was still pretty traceable, and appears to only really be for messaging apps since you have to know where you’re sending to already. Your motion idea has some merit to it, but I was kinda hoping for something more on the software side.
I don’t really know about term limits. Maybe people should be forced to take a break now and then no more than two consecutive terms in a row and not more than a third of the terms over some period of time just to prevent entrenchment, but I don’t want to stop people from voting for whoever they want to vote for generally.
I care about term lengths far more. Life terms? Yeah, no. To me, 6-8 years would a lot more reasonable maybe ten years if you really believe it’d be too unstable otherwise, but these lifetime appointments are insane. Honestly, I’m surprised terms that long don’t make them assassination targets. We should shorten their terms to prevent them from becoming targets for people who target those with too much power.
I still think universities and academic societies should be hosting instances and funding them with dedicated endowments. It’d also provide a great way to request more money from people who feel a reciprocal obligation due to using the instance.

Apologies, I think we are talking past each other. I think I misunderstood your initial comment. It read like a suggestion that lemmy’s more extreme communities were terroristic and a criticism of the first amendment, which suggested that you believe the government should be allowed to dictate what kind of speech is or isn’t acceptable – in particular on these little platforms. My comment was in response to that notion.
Re-reading it with your second comment, I think you’re saying that “terrorist ideologies” have been allowed to develop on conventional social-media by claiming first amendment protections in order to not moderate communities, and 2016 was not in reference to early lemmy but to the MAGA movement. That makes more sense, and I generally agree that conventional social-media follows irresponsible stewardship practices.
