My grandpa bought a 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 25 years ago. He kept it up, and now it’s mine. It was a top trim luxury car when it was new, and it has screws exposed on things like the A pillars. My 1993 Subaru Loyale also has exposed screws everywhere. It’s so fucking nice, as compared to my newer vehicles where I break 17 plastic tabs off trying to remove the A pillar trim. It’s asinine, exposed screws look dope.
My SO’s car is a Ford (pretty reliable actually) and the first fix-it we did needed torx bits. Ugh, go out and get a set of those… come back and start again. I look around and they are everywhere. It might deter some, but to us it was a waste of time and a F-you to those of us who can fix our piles.
Oh, and a special F-you to whomever designed the absolute useless (not making it up; it’s a 4 inch hollow chunk or metal welded to the frame nothing bolts to, hides inside, or protects) protrusion blocking a wrench from the oil drain bolt. A pox on thee!
Nothing wrong if you have the drivers, but if you find yourself in a pinch, they aren’t prevalent like Philips or standard screwdrivers. A socket set is part of our emergency kit now.
Its corner-cutting to save assembly costs. Plastic tabs take sub-seconds to whack into place vs screws which take 20+ seconds each.
Theyre saving ~$100 on your car assembly process and the end result is you have a vastly more annoying car to work on and repair for its entire lifetime. Its beyond annoying.

What’s wrong with Torx? Better than phillips innit?

Extracting a stripped Phillips is way worse than running to the store for a set of torx bits haha
Should have always been. Torx is far superior, less chance of stripping.

But they pass the $100 saving onto the consumer, right?
….right?
