  • In October of last year my mom came home from the ICU, now unable to get out of bed. I replaced all the bulbs in the house with smart bulbs and put the fans on a little smart plug thing. It made me really like the idea of home smart home features, but I’m not techy. They’re just Alexa enabled for her to use with the fire stick, and I use google home on my phone for em.

Can you offer any advice for ones that don’t require internet? Every time our power goes out (any time there’s a storm), I have to go around and reset them while they flash at me like the worst night club

  • Honestly, that’s the most surprising thing to me. I’m so used to seeing the democrats have amazing opportunities and completely and totally fail to see them. It would be comical if it didn’t have such dire consequences. It’s like a reverse Mr. Magoo, everything looks safe, but they’re constantly stepping on rakes and walking off ledges and just missing that suitcase full of cash. It’s absurd.

This time, though, it’s like they actually see the path forward and they’re taking it. It’s wild.

  • Hated Biden 2 weeks ago, hated Biden 4 years ago.

    Still voted for him.

She’s not progressive, she is, at best, a sheep dog candidate attempting to herd the unruly progressives who have the audacity to think America should actually do some of the shit we should have done 50 years ago.

Still voting for her. Still gonna do everything in my extremely limited power to get others to vote for her. Electoral politics is never going to be the thing that gets us the changes we want, and pretending so isn’t doing us any favors. The real work takes place between elections. Right now is the time to do everything we can to make sure we survive long enough to do the other, in my opinion, more important work. We need to survive, and as completely fucked as it is, Harris is our best chance at survival right now. Is she going to get us medicare for all? Absolutely not, regardless of what she said in 2020. Is she going to fix the climate, or defeat fascism in America? No. Why? Because she exists in the context of all that came before her, and a big portion of that context is neoliberal capitulation to the right wing, and a ratcheting of the democratic party ever further right. Hell, if she were left enough to make Bernie Sanders look like Donald Trump she still wouldn’t, and couldn’t, do those things. Those kinds of things require massive public support in the forms of a politically active, willing to protest and burn shit down french style populace. We aren’t going to get a truly progressive president until AFTER progressives have been so overwhelmingly large in number that we literally cannot be ignored, much like the Tea Party and MAGA. Sadly, if that ever happens, America will probably have to invade America to remind us our American values.

  • Okay, I rarely comment on political posts on Lemmy, because I value my time, and my sanity. And I agree with you. This is our best chance. But I just want to say that Kamala does not represent a way to defeat American fascism. She represents a way to buy some time until we can form a movement that goes so far beyond neo liberal policies it’s unreal. It’s still unlikely, but she’s hopefully buying us 4 years.

Maybe I’m just being pedantic, but it genuinely worries me when people think that Kamala or really any major politician in the US can defeat fascism. Normal got us here, normal will send us right back.

Again, not trying to be an ass, and perhaps you also meant she buys us time, but this shit scares me. If she wins in November, and even I, as a filthy commie, I hope she does, it isn’t a victory in the war against American fascism. It’s a bandaid, a canteen of water, and a chance to regroup.
